Iyer has signed with Lancashire County Cricket Club to play in England’s domestic cricket season. This stint with Lancashire marks Iyer’s first experience in English county cricket, offering him an opportunity to gain valuable experience in different playing conditions and further develop his skills.
In the match against Worcestershire at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday, Iyer scored 25 runs with the bat as Lancashire scored 237 in their 40 overs.
Worcestershire were 222/8 in 48 overs when Iyer was handed the ball for the penultimate over.
Iyer got off to a bad start as he conceded fours on the first two balls. 2 wides and 2 singles on the next two balls followed and the equation came down to 4 runs needed off the last 8 balls.
But Iyer first had Tom Hinley caught by Harry Singh at deep mid-wicket and on the next ball trapped Harry Darley plumb in front of the wicket for a first ball duck to turn the match on its head.
Worcestershire were bowled out for 234 in 49 overs and Lancashire won the match by 3 runs.
Lancashire posted a clip of the dismissals and the winning moment on their official X handle:
Playing in county cricket is often seen as beneficial for cricketers from the subcontinent, as it exposes them to the challenging conditions in England, including seaming pitches and overcast weather.
For Iyer, this is a chance to refine his game, particularly against the moving ball, which can be crucial for his development as a complete cricketer.
During his time with Lancashire, Iyer will have the chance to play alongside and against some of the best cricketers in England’s domestic circuit, which can help enhance his cricketing knowledge and adaptability.
This experience will likely contribute to his growth as an all-rounder, making him an even more valuable player for Kolkata Knight Riders and the Indian national team.
