NEW DELHI: Pace sensation Mayank Yadav and prolific all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will no longer be uncapped players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 retention and auction, having made their T20I debuts for India against Bangladesh in Gwalior on Sunday.
Their elevation to the international stage comes as a result of standout performances in the IPL, and now their experience with the national team adds further value.
Mayank, 22, made heads turn with deliveries of more than 150 kilometres (93 miles) per hour for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in this year’s IPL.
Reddy made a strong impact in the star-studded Sunrisers Hyderabad line-up with his explosive batting. The right-hander shot to fame during the group stage match against Rajasthan Royals, where he hammered a 42-ball 76, featuring eight towering sixes. He wrapped up the season with an impressive 303 runs.
With this new status, they are likely to attract significant attention during the retention and auction process, as franchises will look to secure their services. Their transition from promising IPL talents to capped international players positions them as key assets for the next year’s IPL.
The India debuts for both the players mean that they can now get more than Rs 4 crore, if retained, which is the designated amount for retaining an uncapped player.
The deadline for franchises to complete and submit their final list of retained players is October 31, 2024. In terms of player retention, any player who represents their country in an international match before October 31 will be classified as a capped player.
According to the new retention rules announced by the IPL Governing Council, a franchise can retain a total of six players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. The six retentions/RTM’s can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.
With the new rule coming in place and each team having an increased auction purse of Rs 120 crore each, there will be a reduction of Rs 18 crore, 14 crore and 11 crore respectively for the first three retentions.
The subsequent fourth and fifth retentions will see the franchise purse getting lighter by Rs 18 crore and 14 crore. Effectively, five retentions will come at a cost of Rs 75 crore.
