NEW DELHI: Mounir Nasraoui, father of Spanish football star Lamine Yamal, was attacked in a car park in Mataro, Catalonia on Wednesday, July 12th at approximately 19:10 GMT. The incident occurred in the Rocafonda neighbourhood, the same area where Yamal grew up.
According to the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force, Nasraoui sustained multiple stab wounds during the attack.He was subsequently transported to Can Ruti Hospital for medical treatment.
While the hospital has not released an official statement, a source close to the family confirmed that Nasraoui is in stable condition and considered “out of danger,” though he remains under observation.
Law enforcement officials have apprehended four individuals in connection with the attack. Three suspects were detained on Wednesday night and are currently being questioned at the Mataro police station. A fourth individual was taken into custody on Thursday morning at approximately 09:00 GMT.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities are planning to interview the victim, Mounir Nasraoui, as soon as possible to gather his account of the events.
Witness testimonies will also be crucial in piecing together the circumstances that led to the attack. Preliminary reports from the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia suggest that a street altercation involving Nasraoui and several individuals escalated into the stabbing incident.
Lamine Yamal, a rising star in the world of football, made his debut for Barcelona at the age of 15 in April 2023. He played a pivotal role in Spain’s recent Euro 2024 victory, becoming the youngest player to both participate and score in the tournament’s history.
Yamal maintains a strong connection to his hometown of Rocafonda, where his father and grandmother still reside. He frequently celebrates goals with a “304” hand gesture, a tribute to his neighbourhood’s postal code.
