NEW DELHI: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has signed a new long-term contract with the club, the Premier League title contenders announced on Thursday.
The 42-year-old Spaniard has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal.
Arteta, who took over as Arsenal’s boss in December 2019, expressed pride in his role.
“I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here,” he said.
“I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.”
Arteta has led the team to significant achievements, including winning the FA Cup in his first season.
Arsenal has twice finished as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City under his management.
Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke praised Arteta, calling him a dynamic and passionate manager, who is relentless in the pursuit of excellence.
“He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values, and since joining us as head coach, he has taken the team to another level in an Arsenal way,” said Kroenke.
In the current season, Arsenal stands fourth in the Premier League table and will begin their Champions League campaign next week against Atalanta.
Arteta previously played 150 matches for Arsenal and served as team captain. He had indicated that his contract situation would be addressed at the appropriate time and expressed contentment with his position at the club.
Arsenal strengthened its squad in the summer transfer window with new signings including Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino, and Riccardo Calafiori. However, there are questions about whether the team has sufficient firepower to surpass Manchester City.
